Eagles Eager for New Season

‘Newest Team in Town’ introduces some of the upcoming Australian Football clubs who have recently joined their respective league’s around Europe.

Reporter for AFL Europe, James Brosnan, recently spoke to club president of the West Lothian Eagles, Jamie Townend, talking all things West Lothian after the club officially joined the Scottish Australian Rules Football League in 2019.

LIKE it has for most of us, the COVID-19 lockdown came at the most inopportune time for the newest club in Scotland, the West Lothian Eagles.

Heading into their second season for premiership points, the Eagles were excited for the season ahead following an improved finish to 2019 and some encouraging preseason form.

Located between Edinburgh and Glasgow, the club has continued to grow since starting under founder Mikey Allan and inaugural president Ross Barker.

The Eagles now have close to 50 members and both a men’s and women’s team.

Current president of the Eagles, Jamie Townend, said the club is eagerly anticipating the start of the new season.

“We are absolutely gutted about the (COVID-19) situation,” Jamie said.

“We ran through a pretty intense pre-season schedule… we were a lot more organised than any of the other two years we have been trying.”

The club is made up mostly of local players, with only around five Australians across the team.

Some of the Australians the club has had involved include Matt Heaney, Mick Dyer and Sophie Leonard, all of which are involved in coaching the Scottish national teams.

“Since they have come on board and taken over the coaching, we have made leaps and bounds on the pitch.

Player/Coach Matt Heaney

“Things like the attitude at training, it’s been ten times better than what it was.

“It’s been a lot more professional, which has been a big step for a team like us.”

The Eagles started their journey into the SARFL with a series of matches against existing Scottish clubs in 2018, proving they could sustain as a club moving forward.

“Halfway through that first season, we had a couple of ladies messaging our Facebook page wanting to come along… we decided to make a go of it and got seven or eight girls involved initially.

“The ladies team now are their own sort of unit, they pretty much run themselves and they absolutely love it. It has gone really well from that perspective.

“A few other teams have cottoned on to bring their ladies teams along which has led to the introduction of a proper women’s league in Scotland, which is an amazing step.”

The inaugural SARFLW season will include the Eagles, Edinburgh Bloods, Glasgow Sharks and Greater Glasgow Giants.

West Lothian Women's Land a Big Tackle

Unlike a lot of teams across Europe, the Eagles are in the enviable position of having some match time in before the lockdown.

The Eagles teamed up for a game with the Glasgow Sharks, and then hosted the Ash Palmer Cup prior to the lockdown coming into place.

The events raised close to £500 for the Australian Bushfire Fund.

The Ash Palmer Cup is held for a former Falkirk player who was in a car accident and now in a wheelchair. The Falkirk Silverbacks no longer exist, but a number of their players are now with the Eagles.

“We try and keep Ash involved in our club and get him along to different events. It’s a day for Ash to enjoy with his family.”

The day included a mixed women’s match, as well as three men’s teams including the Eagles, Sharks and a mixed team.

“Our Eagles men came away with wins in both games which we were delighted with.

“Being quite a new club, we haven’t won many games yet so to get that one was a big step for us.

“We were just annoyed that all the momentum we built got cut short.”

For Jamie, his love for the game was only discovered three years ago, and is reflected across his (mostly) European teammates.

Club President lays a Tackle

“I went down to the first training session we held and just loved it, I think it was in January and it was freezing cold.

“We played that development year and won the game against the Kingdom Kangaroos and it totally gave me the bug. I fell in love with it.”

AFL Scotland president David Baldie said that the Eagles have been a welcome addition in taking their competition to six teams.

“AFL Scotland were proud to welcome the West Lothian Eagles into the league, since then they have become an imbedded part of the Scottish football community with a great club ethos and their membership goes from strength to strength,” David said.

PSS Presents: Around the Grounds – Socials Edition #6

Featuring the best online posts from the AFL Europe community, PSS International Removals Presents: Around the Grounds – Socials Edition.

Good news begins to spark around Europe as restrictions from the COVID-19 outbreak begin to ease, and certain countries find themselves able to get back onto the footy field within a matter of weeks.

In Germany, Rheinland and Dresden are two clubs that are fortunate enough to resume training, however, must do so under certain conditions.

It’s important that it is made clear that both clubs will be following government guidelines by limiting numbers, maintaining at least a 1.5m social distance (no high fives) from one another, sanitising hands and equipment as well as structuring water breaks amongst the group.

If you would like to get involved in any of these training sessions, please contact the clubs to let them know you will be attending so that they can ensure the number of attendees will abide by government guidelines.

We look forward to seeing some of your pictures and videos from training!

Australian Football will also see a return in the Netherlands!

The Waterland Eagles are set to resume training next Monday on the 18th of May.

This will be the first time in almost two months the Eagles will be able to get back onto the park for a training session.

Two of the North London Lionesses players were recently celebrated on TV in Australia for their efforts as paramedics in London.

Sarah and Bec, who featured in week three of Around the Grounds last month, shared with us what their life has been like in these past eight weeks working for the NHS.

The pair were then thanked by the Australian High Commission and surprised with some Australian treats.

The girls soon after presented High Commissioner, George Brandis, with one of their club’s playing tops.

The Perpignan Tigers are continuing to find new ways to engage with their fans on social media.

The Tigers, on Instagram, have made their own ‘Spot the Difference’ using a previous photo taken at one of their games.

Can you spot the five differences?

The Geneva Jets are working hard to keep fit at home.

The players are eager for footy to return in Switzerland in hope of defending their 2019 premiership.

The players are making sure that when that time comes, they are going to be in top shape!

If a return to training is permitted in your country, please make sure that you are keeping yourselves and your local community safe by strictly following government guidelines.

It is important that we continue to prioritise the welfare of each other and only resume training once it is safe to do so.

Belushi’s and St Christopher’s Inns to continue partnership with AFL Europe

AFL Europe are excited to announce that we will be continuing our partnership with Belushi’s and St Christopher’s Inns in 2020.

With bars and hostels in London, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Berlin and more, Belushi’s and St Christopher’s Inns have played an integral part in helping Australian Football grow across Europe.

Belushi’s Marketing Manager, Ben Kelly, is excited to see the partnership between AFL Europe and Belushi’s continue in 2020.

“We’ve seen the partnership between AFL Europe and Belushi’s flourish over the past few years,” said Kelly.

“We’ve teamed up to promote AFL across Europe with events for the finals and the Grand Final which see more and more interest every year.

“We’ve been particularly impressed by the impact of the sport on non-Australians with teams formed in pretty much every country we operate in, who love to join for a beer after a day’s play.”

Belushi’s have provided teams after AFL Europe events and tournaments a safe and fun place to get together and socialise, putting on plenty of food, drinks and music, as well as streaming AFL matches.

With the continued partnership, Belushi’s will obtain naming rights to AFL Europe’s new weekly Trivia, which will now feature prizes to be won.

“We think the weekly trivia organised by AFL Europe is a great idea to keep people having fun whilst they’re isolating at home,” Kelly said.

“We’re happy to offer some prizes and will be giving it a go ourselves!”

AFL Europe General Manager, Ryan Davey, is overjoyed to see AFL Europe and Belushi’s partner up for another year.

“Belushi’s and St Christopher’s Inns have been a great supporter of AFL Europe for an number of years now, and play a big part in the growth of Australian Football throughout Europe,” said Davey.

“Throughout the partnership, they have been a great host for our after parties, as well as providing accommodation for travelling players through St. Christopher’s Inns Hostels.

“When players can get together and socialise at such events, it sparks conversation about Australian Football and the game in Europe which has been growing the sport noticeably across the international landscape.

“Once AFL resumes in Australia, we will be encouraging all AFL fans across Europe to drop into a Belushi’s Bar to catch all the action on their big screens – there is no better place to watch AFL in Europe.”

Keep your eyes out for the new AFL Europe Trivia with Belushi’s tomorrow, but for now, check out Belushi’s via their Facebook @belushis.bars and Instagram @belushis to keep up with all of their news and events!

McCarthy was one of the Bulldogs’ highest disposals-getters for the 2020 season, averaging just over 13 touches as well as four tackles per game.

Some good news for Australian Football in Bulgaria as seen in this post by the Sofia Magpies.

Bulgaria’s Health Minister has lifted the ban on visiting national and nature parks outside cities and towns, meaning that footy training for club’s in the country edge a tiny bit closer to returning!

The Waterland Eagles throwback to the time when they appeared on RTV Purmerend.

A few of the Eagles hopped on the panel to chat about the sport of Australian Football in Purmerend as well as the overall growth of the sport around Europe.

An enormous battle went down between two of AFL Europe’s powerhouse clubs, Wandsworth Demons and West London Wildcats, as the teams took to Strava to compete in an epic endurance race.

Players from Wandsworth and West London had just one week to see which club could out-cycle and out-run the other team… and it has led to some impressive numbers!

Posted by The Wandsworth Demons on Tuesday, 28 April 2020

The competition saw 181 AFL London participants pull their shoes on and get outside (individually) to notch a combined total of over 6000km cycled and 2000km ran.

Congratulations for a huge effort by both clubs, in what was a great way to get the legs moving whilst having some healthy competition in isolation.

Stade Toulousain have travelled back to 2015 when they (at the time, Toulouse Hawks) finished 5th at AFL Europe’s Champions League.

This shot was taken after their win against the Manchester Mosquitos, as they placed fifth overall, the best result of any French club in the history of the tournament.

It’s great to see those at Port Malmo keeping the Australian Football spirit alive and fortunate enough to be allowed to continue training in Sweden!

Right now a lot of our normal routines have been turned upside down. But one thing that is still happening is outdoor…

Posted by Port Malmö Football Club on Saturday, 2 May 2020

Port Malmo are welcoming both past and new players to get down to their trainings for a kick of the footy in some safe, non-contact drills.

If you’re in Port Malmo and are interested in getting involved in Australian Football then why not contact the club or make your way down to one of their trainings on a Tuesday or Thursday!
