About

Australian Rules Football has a long history in Scotland, with the first games being played in the country in the 1800s. A team of Australian students studying at Edinburgh university were one of the notable early competitors. Scots were also involved in the development of the game and rules in Australia. After irregular competitions and teams during the 1990s, the Scottish Australian Rules Football League (SARFL) was formed in 2003. The league has continued to expand, incorporating more clubs and a Women’s league. Since 2024, there have been 6 men’s teams from 5 clubs, and 3 women’s teams involved in the competitions. AFL Scotland also runs an open pre-season tournament ‘The Haggis Cup’ and enters the Scottish Clansmen and Scottish Sirens to AFL Europe tournaments.
