Champions League Stories – The Journey of Vest: A Unique Story in AFL Europe

By Zach Hanson

Vest Football Club have a unique and interesting story that highlights resilience and success. The club was founded in 2022 after a merger between 3 struggling clubs – Odense, Aarhus and Aalborg, whom are all located within the western region of Denmark. These clubs were facing a huge possibility of folding as numbers were dwindling and thus losing the sport of Aussie rules football within their communities.

These clubs understanding the severity of the situation, and that there is strength in numbers and unity, they decided to come together and form Vest Football Club. This gave the clubs the chance to keep footy alive within the 3 cities and give themselves a fresh start. We then saw this merger become a resounding success, combining the efforts of committed players, dedicated coaches and support staff, to grow the club and team to be overflowing with numbers and enthusiasm that football was back in Denmark, and in a big way!

As the years progressed, Vest became the shining light of Aussies Rules in Denmark. A community had come together, showing enormous amounts of camaraderie among the players and supporters alike. The club’s success on the field mirrored its growth off, as the people from Odense, Aarhus and Aalborg became more and more interested in joining the exciting journey.

In early 2024, it was decided amongst the club that the 2024 season would the last for Vest, disbanding and allowing the original 3 clubs to re-establish themselves as their own. This was a tough decision, as it marked the end of Vest which was such an integral part of Football within Denmark. The Vest football club were extremely proud of the progress they had made but were determined to leave a final bit of history to their legacy.

So, the 2024 season came, with a football club more determined and committed than ever, as they knew this was there last. Vest had their most successful year of all and managed to win it all. This victory also etched Vest into history as they became the first team outside of Copenhagen to win the Dutch League. As we move into 2025, looking to continue their run of form and momentum, Vest will make their debut at the 2025 AFL Europe Champions League in Lyon this year.

A grand final win and promotion to the Champions League is truly a fitting way to showcase the years of determination and dedication to building football in Denmark in what was on the brink of disappearing. The story of Vest is a shining example of how community spirt and teamwork can revive a sport and create a lasting legacy. The future of Aussie Rules Football in the West of Denmark looks bright, thanks to the journey of Vest.
