Champions League Stories – Cork Vikings: Dynasty
By Zach Hanson
The Cork Vikings are poised to cement themselves as a dynasty as they compete for their fourth consecutive AFL Europe Champions League title in 2025. This year’s tournament marks a crucial moment for the team as they aim to equal the record (set by the West London Wildcats from 2015-2018 in the Men’s competition) for the most Champions League titles won in a row, a remarkable achievement that would solidify their place as one of Europe’s most dominant teams. With an ever-growing fan base and an impressive track record, the Vikings are gearing up for yet another unforgettable campaign.
At the heart of the Vikings’ success this year are co-captains Annie Walsh and Shannon Stevenson. The pair, both passionate and determined, have been instrumental in guiding the team through its rigorous preparations for the Champions League.
Annie and Shannon shared their excitement ahead of the tournament, saying, “We are excited to be returning to Lyon for the 2025 AFL Europe Champions League. It’s a fantastic honour for us as a group to represent Cork Vikings and AFL Ireland in such a prestigious competition where the best of the best from AFL Europe’s clubs vie to be crowned European Champions.”
While they acknowledge the tough challenges that lie ahead, the Vikings are prepared. Coach Chris O’Brien has been meticulous in preparing the team, and with the squad putting in countless hours of work since January. “We are under no illusions about the tough competition ahead,” Annie and Shannon continued. “But Coach Chris has done a fantastic job preparing us, and we’re all committed to giving it our best.
A special mention was made of the Leeside Lions, the club’s male counterparts, who have supported the Vikings over the years.
The Cork Vikings’ rise on the European stage began in 2022 when they made their Champions League debut in Amsterdam. The Vikings emerged victorious by 11 points in a dramatic final against the East Coast Eagles, clinching their first-ever Champions League title.
In 2023, the Vikings travelled to Paris to defend their title. Building on the lessons learned from the previous year, they reached the final against the Edinburgh Bloods. It was a match of contrasting halves, but the Vikings held firm and secured back-to-back titles. This victory solidified their reputation as one of Europe’s premier Club teams.
Fast-forward to the 2024 tournament, as they are coming off their back-to-back champions leagues victories. A hard-fought battle against the Glasgow Sharks resulted in a third consecutive title for the Cork Vikings, making them one of the most successful clubs in Champions League history.
Now, as they prepare for their fourth consecutive appearance in the AFL Europe Champions League, the Cork Vikings are determined to break even more records. With their experience, the team is focused to win their fourth Champions League title in a row. The 2025 tournament in Lyon is poised to be another fierce battle but the Vikings are ready.
The Vikings contribute a lot of their success to their passion for fostering a strong community around the sport. They always recognise the tireless work of its committee members and supporters who have worked hard behind the scenes to promote and grow the team and the sport.
As they look to achieve even greater heights in the 2025 Champions League. The Vikings are not just chasing another title; they’re chasing dynasty status and with their eyes set on the record books, there’s no telling what this remarkable team can achieve next.
