It’s set to be a gloriously sunny afternoon in Sweden tomorrow as the Odense Lions take on the Port Malmo Maulers at the Limhamnsfalet grounds to kick off Round 8 of the Denmark Australian Football League (DAFL). The match begins at 1pm and will see the Lions battling to secure their spot in the DAFL top 4 after three successful wins so far this season and coming off the back of last weekend’s win over Copenhagen. The Maulers, however, have had a tough season but will use the momentum from last round’s victory over the Helsingborg Saints to try to take down the Lions and make some progress on the DAFL ladder.
Odense’s Coach puts the team’s recent success down to a solid pre-season and the player’s high fitness and conditioning efforts, and is glad to see these efforts show results as they move up the leaderboard. The Lion’s have also maintained a high level of consistency with their standardised training routine to cope with the influx of new players in their side – Round 7 saw six new Lions make their debuts with a record number of 24 players overall.
The Lion’s coach had this to say about how the team is shaping up for this weekend’s match: “Playing a modestly inexperienced side with a couple of our best on the sidelines, we still managed to beat one of the leagues reputable sides and last seasons runner up (Copenhagen). We are building in confidence and looking to carry this momentum forward into this weekend’s match against Port Malmo. Travel is always a key factor for the home side being in a better position to put together a strong side, and we saw this last weekend with the Maulers knocking over the Saints – we as a club have a lot of respect for the Maulers at home. We have selected a reasonably strong side to head over this weekend and are confident our best footy will be enough to take home the 4 points with hopefully our first ever win against the Maulers. Go Lions!”
Congratulations are also in order for Odense’s co founder, Morten Merhoj who will play his 100th DAFL game this weekend. Since co founding the club in 2013, Morten has played in every single Lions game and rightfully took home the Club’s Best and Fairest award in 2015. Morten dedicates hours of his time to organising both the men’s and women’s sides each week and works tirelessly to develop AFL in Odense. Morten was also lucky enough to meet his fiancé, one of the original Lionesses, through the club and together they have a little Lion cub!
The Port Malmo Maulers have had a rocky start to the 2017 season, with a mix of an ageing squad and some relatively new players making it challenging for the team to find the chemistry needed to win matches. The Maulers managed to find some form last weekend and came away with a solid win against the Helsingborg Saints. The Maulers put their victory down to the commendable persistence and patience from the Mauler’s Coach, Jimmy Weston, who managed to guide the team into their first win of the season. Port Malmo Football Club are happy to have Jimmy around as he has the unique ability to analyse a match and apply his thought into action at team training sessions.
In Jimmy’s words, “It could be a tough one this weekend – sure we have the homeground advantage and a little bit of momentum after last weekend, but Odense will also be coming to Malmo with high ambitions. They want to maintain their spot in the top 4 and have also had good form of late. I expect it to be a fierce and physical contest and we are without a doubt ready for whatever they throw at us.”
Good luck to both the Lions and the Maulers on their match this weekend – we look forward to seeing which team comes out on top next week!
